Tagalog Post #1

I’ve been on a slump for the past couple of weeks. Things have been shitty since I got back from holiday and it really got to me. It all started with a phone call I got during my holiday. And this is where my Tagalog skills will come into play...

Habang nasa bakasyon ako, tinawagan ko yung kaibigan ko sa trabaho, si P to check up on some things. Sabi ni P, napagbalik ko sa traboho, gusto daw ako kausapin nang mga boss ko. Naku. Nakakatakot. So sabi ko, ano nanaman ginawa ko? Sabi ni P, hindi daw nila nagustohan yung result sa isang case ko. Kailangan ku daw pumunta sa meeting sa Martes. So needless to say, I was a bit disturbed and peeved about that phone call. So come Monday, pagbalik ko sa trabaho, I was really stressed out. As it turns out, tumawag rin yung isa ko pang boss para sa iba namang topic daw. Hindo ko to na-expect. So pumunta ako sa opisina para mag-meet sa ka nila. Guess what we talked about? Well, you’re reading it. Basically, there are psychos out there and it’s for my own benefit to watch out sa mga aking sinusulat. Sabi nila, may mga incidents in the past na na-threaten yung mga abogado rito. All the while nakinakausap ako, sinasabi rin nila na wala silang intention to stop me from writing or yung freedom of speech. Napaka 'PC' ano? ;)

Ok. I think they are right. But am I careful. It was just scary to talk about that topic altogether and to find myself in that situation. It’s not that I think they wouldn’t find out about it, I just thought it wouldn't even interest them to actually read it (and my archives for that matter, because they actually looked through them).

So that’s one thing that stressed me out. I promised na hindi na ako magsusulat tungkol sa aking trabaho. Maski “outlet” ito para sa aking mga problema, hindi ko no susulatin kung anong nangyari sa work. After all, I’ve heard stories about people getting fired over this and everything. I guess I’m lucky I got a warning. *sigh* I have certainly learned my lesson! Don't worry, this is my last post about that.

Then the next day, I had another meeting with iba namang tao about a different topic. Feel ko ay all I do is mess up here. Ay nako. Ang dami kung drama dito at parang nawala ang aking motivation. I am so disillusioned right now, it’s not even funny. I shouldn’t take it personally, I know, but I do. The thing is, gustong-gusto ko ang aking trabaho, pero masyadong maraming "pulang" tape. Pero I know na wala naman perfect na trabaho, right? I guess I'm just going through a lot of stuff. I've been in a bad mood.

Wow. That took me quite a long time to type out. Pardon me for any grammatical/spelling errors. My tagalog skills are rusty although I am fluent. I think the last time I’ve ever written anything in Tagalog (that was more than 5 sentences long) was back in the 4th grade for “Pilipino” class. Other than that, I don’t recall writing out anything in Tagalog. The primary reason for me not speaking or writing in Tagalog is that I’m much more adept in communicating in English. Don’t get me wrong, I speak Tagalog when I’m around my relatives, while in the Philippines, speaking with someone visiting from the Philippines, or with someone who prefers to speak in Tagalog. However, I don’t speak Tagalog with my parents (partly because my youngest brother doesn’t understand it) or with my other friends who are fluent in Tagalog (unless we want to talk shit about someone…bwahahah =). I also realize that I think in English and have been doing so since I can remember. I don't know why this is the case, but I distinctly remember writing out short stories as early as 5 years old and I certainly thought it out in English. I also thought out stories for my Barbie dolls and G.I. Joes in English as well. Perhaps this is why folks have commented on how fast I've "gotten rid" of my accent when we got here. I didn't consciously try to do so. I talk how I talk. Who knows?

Rage Against the Machine

Ever been so mad that you could actually beat someone up with your rage? Last night, I went to an open mic show with a friend. We circled the area a few times looking for parking. After about 10 minutes, we found a spot. I backed into it and started to park. It’s a skinny street, and there was a car behind me. The car behind me, however, apparently could not wait. The driver squeezed in order to go through, fully aware that I was parking. I had just literally pulled in and there he goes, squeezing and SCRATCHING my car. My car that I had just picked up from the auto-body shop about a week ago because I got into an accident. I honk my horn furiously and leap out of my seat, yelling. But the son-of-a-bitch-ass driver did not stop and sped away. I squinted furiously trying to get his license plate number, but alas, no dice. F*cking-A. I could just about scream and throw a rock at his window. But I was helpless, my car was still not fully parked, I had a friend in the passenger seat almost as mad as me, and I couldn’t do a thing. I checked out the damage. Big-ass scratch of course in the driver side (by the wheel). The same exact area that was damaged in my previous accident and had just gotten fixed. And the thing that totally gets me is that if the bastard had just waited for at least 1 more second, this wouldn’t have happened. He totally did it on purpose. It’s not that I was taking long to park or anything. After all, I had just literally pulled in for all of 10 seconds. I just need to straighten out. Instead, he squeezed his way through damaging my car, and I’m sure, his own car as well. Stupid piece of sh*t!!!

When I got home, I recounted the story to the hubs and he was like “you didn’t call the police?! Why not?!” Well, why bother? I had no information. No license plate. Nada. But he insisted that at least there would’ve been a record of the incident and I could get my insurance to pay for the damage. It didn’t seem worth it to me at the time. I was just too shocked and pissed off the guy’s audacity to just leave the scene of an accident. Maybe I should’ve filed a report. *sigh*

I have lost all hope in humanity. I am fed up. I know that in light of everything, what happened to me is hardly a tragedy. But it’s people like that bastard who contribute to the overall degradation of society and makes everyone else’s life miserable. I really think so.

Needless to say, I was in a foul mood when I actually got to the open mic. I checked out the place with a couple of bandmates to see if we could perform there. My mood was slightly uplifted when I heard the folks perform. All of them were excellent. They had great original music. There was this one kid who looked about 15 years old and he was amazing. He cheered me up a bit…that is, until I walked back to my car and saw the scratch again. F*cking-A.

Mere Mortals

Our godfather passed away on Valentine’s Day. He was our ninong at our wedding and the hubs and his family have known him for many, many years. I’ve only known him for a short time, but I always enjoyed spending time with him and his family. They live in Cape May, close to Atlantic City, and going to their parties was always fun and joyous.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer last year around the summer. He had undergone several operations and recovered very quickly. He was up and about and traveling again in no time. Then earlier this year, he relapsed and doctors found more things wrong with his lungs. He was in the hospital back and forth. This past week, doctors stated his lungs could no longer operate normally (as only 7% of his lungs could function). Then on Valentine’s Day, he passed. It just all seems so fast.

The hubs and I were discussing how life is just full of surprises. My mom-in-law always said that we are all just living on borrowed time. I agree. There’s nothing like hearing about death to make you realize about how much you should appreciate life.

Postcards from Breckenridge

I’m back from my holiday to Breckenridge, CO. I organized a trip for the hubs and I, plus 5 of our friends. We were there from February 6-10th and had 3 straight days of snowboarding. It’s funny if you think about it. Why would someone pay $$ to freeze their arse off up in the lifts and stay out in the cold for hours on end? Well we all dig it! I had a great time with the hubs and friends. We played Texas Hold ‘Em every night, ate tons of food, boarded, hung-out and had a blast.

Day 1: Arrived at Denver International Airport around 11 am. Then we took a shuttle from the airport to our condo (a 2-hour trip). Most of us got hit pretty hard with symptoms of ‘high-altitude sickness.’ Symptoms include nausea, dizziness, light-headedness, thirst, etc. Breckenridge has an altitude level of at least 9,000 feet. Some of the trails we went on started as high as 11,000 feet. Most of us had to acclimate during the first day and we were worried that we wouldn’t be able to snowboard. However, after we all downed some aspirin and ibuprofen, we were able to get better. Let me just say though, that the first day was killer. Thank goodness we got to our condo without a hitch and it turned out to be a cool and modern unit with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. There was plenty of room for everyone.

Vegging on the couch:

Sol and I going out to eat...

Day 2: 1st Day of Riding! Our condo is about a block away from the shuttle that takes you to the lifts. Actually, the lifts was walking distance from the condo but we were all too tired and breathless to do any major walking. It’s hard enough to walk around with all your gear on, let alone do it 9,000 feet up in the mountains! The lifts took us straight to Peak 8 where we started with a green trail to warm up. The trails were nice and wide, and the view was amazing.

Day 3: It was snowing when we got up. They had expected about 10-14 inches of snow during the night and I was excited to get some powder. When we got to the trails, there were loads of nice, fluffy powder. The hubs and I did a lot of black diamond trails just to test out the snow. We were told that trails in the Mid-west and West-Coast were generally easier than the trails here at home. We were able to maneuver the trails easily, especially since there were no icy patches and tons of fresh powder. During the last half of the day, we chilled at the terrain park (one of 4 terrain parks there) to try some tricks.

Chicks kicking arse!

Yes, that's me doing a table top! (okay, it's not that high...)

Me, missing the rail...

I sit it out instead...

Day 4: Last day to try a 180! One of my goals was to do a 180 turn off a jump. Well, I did complete a lot of jumps, but no 180. I was too scared to even try. Plus, I busted my arse hard on the pipe trying to do a jump-turn. Our friend Steve, though, was able to complete 2 360-degree turns and tried a sh*t-load of crazy-ass tricks! Man, I wish I was that gutsy. But I did do a lot of jumps. I didn't get a lot of air, but I was still a couple of feet off the ground! The last day of boarding wasn't all that great because it was really cold and windy. It was actually about 3-degrees in the morning, though it did warm up a little around noon to a sunny 20-degrees.

If you squint, you can tell that's me doing a jump...=)

The hubs ready to roll...

View of the mountain that day:

Day 5: We woke up at the butt-crack of dawn because the shuttle was coming to pick us up at 6:45 am. We cleaned up and packed the night before so we weren’t in a rush. We got into the airport with plenty of time to spare and chilled in the lobbies. Back to the daily grind.

The gang (L-R: The hubs, moi, Angie, Sol, Steve, Girlie & hubs Luke):

Next snowboarding trip: Tahoe, Jackson Hole, or Park City?
